AO2

refine their ideas through experimenting and selecting appropriate resources,  media, materials, techniques and processes

Assessment objective 2

is about practical work. It's about what you can do with different media - and how they can help you develop your ideas. You need to experiment with them, and explore what they do.

Assessment objective 2 (AO2) is about experimenting. It can be where you put together the discoveries you made in AO3 and AO1, or you can do your

experimenting before you even start thinking about AO3 and AO1.

AO2 requires you to:

Develop - Build upon ideas - show them in lots of

different ways.

Explore

use different materials, adopt a different artistic style

find out about how the subject you are studying has been seen by other artists or in other cultures

Modify

Once you have an idea about the media or process you want to use, think of how to improve it. Can you make your work more interesting - brighter, darker, bigger, neater, patterned, plain?

Refine

This should all have helped you with an idea for your final piece(AO4).  A good way to prepare for the final piece is to create a mini-version.  You’ll then be able to add your refined ideas before you start  your final piece.

AO2 is all about experimenting

You can get lots of ideas by making a spidergram,

mind map or flowchart. Don’t stop until there’s nothing left to write, however strange the connections you make!

Experimenting

Top tips

Write up your results, good and bad.

Consider surprising results too. Can these be adapted

Explain what you’ve learned by writing up what you did.

Is the topic too narrow? Can you widen it out?

Make a note or sketch of anything that’s important to you.

The more you experiment, the more your work will stand out.

Change your materials

Try using materials in unusual ways and combining different papers and cards with pencils, chalk, inks or paint. You can also use things such as sponges, straws or various types of brushes to get different effects with paint.

Refine - this should all have helped you with an idea for your final piece (AO4). A good way to prepare for the final piece is to create

a mini-version. You’ll then be able to add your refined ideas before you start your final piece.

SEMI 2: what are the elements?

The visual and tactile elements are the individual parts that make up a piece of art, craft or design.

By understanding and using the visual and tactile elements

both within your visual work and writing, you will be covering assessment objective 2. The visual and tactile elements are line, tone, colour, pattern, texture,

shape and form, and harmony and balance.
